The 50's & 60's

ElvisThe 50's

The 50's saw Doo Wop music. And then, when Elvis entered the music kingdom, it was the birth of Rock & Roll. Teenagers came forth with a new type of dancing at the sock hops, and the popular fashion for the girls was poodle skirts and bobby sox, and white t-shirts and jeans for the boys.

The 60's

Surfing music hit the airwaves. Elvis began to see competition when the Beatles entered the scene, and Beatlemania began. Poodle skirts disappeared, and bell bottoms, mini-skirts and go-go boots took over.

The 70's & 80's

The 70's

The early 70's saw the introduction of psychodelic rock with bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin taking over the airwaves. Then enter the white leisure suit. Disco hit the scene with the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever by the BeeGees.

The 80's

Madonna was a "Material Girl" for a material time. Rock evolved into the hair bands like Quiet Riot and Poison. Run DMC and LL Cool J brought rap to the forefront as a legitimate music style. Alternative bands like The Cure and Depeche Mode brought us a unique sound with an emotional value.

The 90's & 2000's

The 90's

The 90's will be remembered as the decade that introduced us to R&B, Hip Hop, Techno and Grunge. We couldn't touch MC Hammer, while Nirvana told us to, "Nevermind". Britney Spears introduced us to Bubblegum Pop.

The 2000's

American Idol brought us names like Clay Aiken and Kelly Clarkson. It was in the 2000s that Hip Hop replaced rock as the most popular music form. Eminem has become the best selling artist of the decade as of 2008.

WAKE FOREST-ROLESVILLE MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE MARATHON

Wake Forest-Rolesville Middle School will host its 3rd annual charity Dance Marathon for Duke Children’s Miracle Network and The North Carolina Children’s Hospital. This event has raised over $22,000 for the hospitals in the last two years.

We are trying a new set-up for this year. In the past, we have had a Charity Fun Fair on the same day as the dance. This year, we will split the two events.

The dance marathon is set for Friday, May 9. The dance will run from 6:00 PM-Midnight However, for those of you who do not wish to leave school, we will have activities in the gym until the dance officially starts. The Fun Fair is may 27th from 3-7 PM.

ARE YOU READY TO BLAST INTO THE PAST?

In an effort to honor America and its incredible music history, the different times of the dance marathon will represent different decades of music. This will not be like any middle school dance you have ever attended! Get ready to literally hear over 5 decades of music with an accompanying LASER LIGHT SHOW! We will also have a variety of gadgets to go with each decade. And of course we'll mix in your favorite dance tunes as well.
  • Early Evening: 50’s and 60’s
  • Mid Evening: 70’s and 80’s
  • Evening: 90’s
  • Late Evening: 2000 to today
  • Finishing Up: Beach Music... Prepare for summer!

HOW DO I SIGN-UP?

In the past, we have asked students to raise at least $10.00 to attend. However, with the extra long hours we are doing this year, we are asking students to raise at least $15.00 for the hospitals!

PLEASE NOTE the dance does not cost $15.00. You may raise the money by asking relatives, friends, and local businesses to contribute. Ideally you should be able to raise much more than $15.00. In fact, we ask that all students try to raise at least $50.00!

$50.00 will earn you some pretty cool incentives!

• 25 tickets to use at the Charity Fun Fair on May 27th (each ticket is worth $1.00 so we are basically give you $25 to spend at the fair!)
• All gadgets from all the decades are yours to wear at the dance and take home afterwards…..FOR FREE! (If you wait until to the dance to buy them, they will cost anywhere between $2-$5 each!)
